The metaverse - an infinite number of universes that D'ni called "The Great Tree of Possibilities". The D'ni were a race that developed the ability to link between worlds in the metaverse simply by describing them in specially-designed "linking books". Their empire spanned many worlds, including a great cavern city under the surface of our world, Earth. The D'ni civilization fell centuries ago, but only now are the remains being discovered by human beings, under the surface of the New Mexico desert. The DRC (D'ni Restoration Council) has been trying to rebuild the cavern and make it safe for human explorers, but their efforts are in conflict with the agenda of surviving D'ni descendants including the enigmatic Yeesha, and with an insect-like sentient race, the Bahro, that had been enslaved by the D'ni Empire.
